Take Back the Beach ‘22

Hello all! Here’s a lengthy post because I have no self control :-)

This past weekend was Smartmouth’s Take Back the Beach event, featuring a few of our vintage vendors by day and some groovy tunes at night. It was a call for locals to come out, have a cold one, and enjoy our lively beach community. I had a blast running around with my camera for a few hours, as I always do at Smartmouth gigs.

As you will see, these kids stole the show for me.

The crew cooking up some goodness inside of the @burritoperdido truck!

Can’t forget about the backbone of the brewery - Thank you to everyone who makes me feel at home. I could watch the Bakehouse pizzas being made all day.

It’s hypnotizing, isn’t it sir…

Crowd started to grow during sound checks.

Kate Bush really did a number on the kids this summer, I had to do a double take!

It’s been a while since I’ve photographed live music, and while shooting I kept having the thought that I can only get so many shots of the same thing - but when I reviewed the embarrassing amount of photos I shot during these 3 sets, I found some gems that make me want to shoot more shows. After all, back in ye old 2007 when I was a wee tween, I wanted to be a band photographer thanks to Andy Barron’s Switchfoot Photo Book (that I cannot find a trace of online to reference, which is causing me to spiral into wondering if I’m being mandala’d; I have reached out to Andy Barron on twitter to see if I’m crazy, and contemplating asking my poor mother to root around my childhood bedroom in search of it. I’d rather not though, who knows what else she’d find……..)

Anyway,

Pet Name, Pearloid, and Berries put on a great show, and they all have albums on Spotify if you’re interested in hearing some local talent!

Although VB’s busy summer season is winding down (and I regret not getting out and about sooner), I’m looking forward to spooky season wholeheartedly. Smartmouth (Pilot House) is doing a horror edition of Beach Chair Cinema every Friday in October and I can’t wait for the lineup reveal!! There is also finally an Artists Block 757 after a long hiatus, and I hope to come across more Halloween events in the next few weeks.

Lastly, a quick plug - I am for hire! If you’re a local business looking for event coverage, promotional images, or have general photography needs, feel free to reach out to me at kteculver@gmail.com or @kteculver on Instagram :-)

Until next time (shouldn’t be long, honestly),

Katie
